BRAZIL: This year, a longer MST land invasion drive

'Red April', the annual land invasion drive conducted by the Movimento Sem Terra ('movement of the landless') began early this year. This was partly because this month Brazil has been hosting, in Porto Alegre, the FAO's second international conference on agrarian reform and rural development. The event was used by the MST, an observer at the conference, to announce that between March and April it will conduct land occupations in 24 of Brazil's 27 states.
